KAITLIN
Aubrey led me through another alcove to a balcony that overlooked the courtyard. The sun was setting, putting on another amazing show. It was hard to believe something bad was out there when the world looked like this. There was a cough and I realized Ares was waiting for us.
“I’m so sorry to pull you away from your guests.” Aubrey’s eyebrows drew together and I realized she was anxious.
I said, “There’s no need to apologize. Obviously something is very wrong or you would have waited.”
She replied, “You are correct.”
She gave her husband a look. Ares took a sip of his wine. He was making me nervous.
“I’m the War God.”
Okay. Way to start a conversation. My nerves spiked even more.
I nodded. “Yes, I know.”
His lips twitched. “My gift is battles and knowing when they’re coming. And there’s a big one headed this way. To Olympus.”
My pulse thudded in my neck. “When?”
His eyes clouded and he looked so scary. “That is the part I don’t know. No one knows. But I feel the plan and it changed. Today, to be exact.”
I took a step away from him. He was putting off some seriously intimidating vibes.
Aubrey sighed. “You’re not doing a very good job of explaining, Ares.”
He said, “Then why don’t you try, my dear wife.”
Gods, they bickered like an old married couple.
Aubrey grinned and said, “So true, Kait.” Her expression became somber. “Ares thinks we can beat whatever is coming to Olympus.”
He nodded. “I’ve imagined different scenarios and only one ends with the Olympians being victorious.”
Flashes of war crossed my mind so fast it made my head spin. He was right. There was only one way to win this War.
“What does Zeus say about this?”
Ares’ shook his head. “He can’t know what we’re planning.”
Dread coiled in my stomach. “You… you want me to lie to my husband?”
Aubrey said, “Zeus can be… overprotective, especially over the people he loves. He won’t agree to this plan because it puts you in danger.”
She was right. He was already getting me a bodyguard and nothing had happened yet. I couldn’t imagine what he would do if we were attacked. But – lying to him still felt very wrong.
Ares said, “I know what I’m asking of you. It’s the same thing I’m asking of my own wife.”
The look in his eyes was pure love as he glanced at Aubrey. She reached out and held his hand to her cheek. They weren’t asking me to do anything they weren’t prepared to do on their own.
“Do you really think that’s going to work?”
He said, “I’m pretty good at determining the outcome of a fight. It’s what I do.”
A bit of history crossed my mind. The Trojan War. I had to say it.
“But you’ve been wrong before.”
He cursed. “I swear to Gods. I’m never going to live that down. Yes, I’ve been wrong once before. One time. Uno. That’s it.”
He was telling the truth, but my point remained. He might know battles, but he also made mistakes.
I held up my hands.
